and so it begins

On saturday morning, I went to a meeting. There was a room full of people. As i sat and listened, and gathered a heaping pile of wet tissues, I realized: these people are all really ....vulnerable. and I am just like them. And yet it is healing to go to this room. I did not expect to hear my story come out of the mouths of strangers.

The Intimacy Problem

I confess. I need it. We all do. And apparently we all develop neurotic behavior in order to avoid it! Why? Doesn't this seem evolutionarily counterintuitive? How does anyone ever become an emotionally healthy person? I am determined to be one. It seems that then and only then can you have non-neurotic truly intimate relationships. You have to be willing to share your feelings and needs with other human beings. How terrifying is that!! And yet... how rewarding.

Being Positive

My recommendation for irreversible and complete positive life change? I'm so glad you asked! Get a dog. 1. you have to go outside, for walks! This simple exercise is incredibly healing 2. you can hang out at dog parks and watch doggies play--NO ONE can maintain a bad mood after doing this. 3. responsibility is validating, i promise.

She Wolf I am a fan of Shakira. I think she's beautiful and talented, and that she brings many fresh and exciting ideas to her music and has a unique and relevant voice as a woman and as a latina. BUT I am concerned about her performance at the ALMA awards last week! At the risk of sounding like an old lady... I was kind of shocked by her performance. I felt like she was objectifying herself and that she was hypersexualized by the camera angle. It was my understanding that the ALMA awards were about celebrating a "diverse, accurate and balanced representation," "positive perceptions," "enhancement of the latino image," "civil rights advocacy" in entertainment. This performance felt...stereotypical, objectifiable, and like a step away from a positive representation of a latina woman. This performance opened the show and set the tone for the evening, and usually I feel like Shakira is Authentic, original, woman-positive, empowered and that she celebrates her femininity and culture through bellydance. And she was lipsyncing. Badly. Shakira, you can do better! We women need you to step up be we latina or otherwise!

getting political

I'm tired of hearing about Joe Wilson. Who cares? Listen, the President graciously accepted his personal apology, and if its good enough for Obama, its over. THEN WHY ARE WE STILL HEARING ABOUT IT???? Ugh! its a distraction from issues that are much more important. And now some people want to allege that the outburst was racially based???? Thats a stretch. It is disrespectful to play the racism card about just anything that involves a person of color.  Racism is real and alive in this country, and its dangers are watered down by these ridiculous media stunts.

Speaking of important issues, Can anybody tell my why no one has addressed the CAUSE of all this trouble with the healthcare system? I feel like we are putting a big useless bandaid on a gaping knifewound that is slowly but surely killing us! The problem is, healthcare is extravagantly expensive. isn't that clear? Why? Why did that happen? Can we address the cause? Where is all the money going?
